Lore & Trivia
Overview
Anime Vanguards is a Roblox anime tower defense from the developer Kitawari, released on September 8, 2024, and it entered its third year on October 12, 2026 with update 15.0 — 2nd Anniversary, subtitled Rise of the True Shadow Monarch. The update is unusual in scale for this genre: alongside four new units, 14 new familiars and a full interface rebuild, it adds a second, entirely separate progression game around a single unit, then removes a progression system that existing players had already paid into.
The experience is currently listed on Roblox as Vanguards: 2nd Anniversary, a temporary rename for the anniversary window, and its page carries an Updated 10/12/2026 timestamp.
Source: Anime Vanguards on Roblox, read October 12, 2026. Official description text: "Summon units to fight these enemies and save these worlds and embark on a thrilling journey to become the strongest!"
This hub covers the live 15.0 build: how the True Shadow Monarch System gates progression, what each new mode pays, which codes are live, and where the difference between the changelog and the older system text matters. The codes subpage holds the string-level detail, and the Shadow Monarch route guide turns the System into an ordered plan.

What Update 15.0 Actually Adds
The changelog for 15.0 is the only complete first-party record of the patch, and it describes systems rather than teasers. Four of those systems carry hard rules worth learning before you queue.
The First Commander is a 20-wave dungeon that requires level 100 and cuts your units to half damage by design. The compensation is an army: Goblins, Hobgoblins, Lizardmen, Lycans and Wolfmen are planned per wave or spawned immediately from the Army menu on K, each with its own perk, each costing Yen that rises as waves progress. The Ant King (Returned) arrives on wave 10 and the Shadow Commander on wave 20, and the reward line is 50 First Commander Tokens per clear plus a 10% shot at Choy Jong En (Guild Leader). Planning troops for the current wave spawns them immediately, which is the only in-run answer to a leak.
Shadow Trials is the Monarch's own arena and is gated behind owning True Shadow Monarch. It supports one to four players, runs seven trials from the Goblin up to the Strongest Shadow, and ranks you from E to S. You equip 3 of 9 abilities, buy weapons from a rotating daily shop, and Arise defeated shadows into your army with three attempts before the shadow fades. Gates are runs of 3 to 5 rooms with a modifier and a boon after each room on a board that changes daily, gate bosses and the Weekly Calamity drop Relics with a 3-relic cap, and the whole thing is managed from the System window on J. The checkpoint: at level 25, with all six shadows arisen and an A-Rank, the Job Change converts you to Necromancer and unlocks the two Monarch abilities, a fourth army slot, Igros the Bloodred and Monarch Levels.
Card Battle is a real card game rather than a themed minigame: a 20-card deck built around a captain, 3 hitpoints per player, and a draw rule that gives you as many cards as the turn number. Losing a hitpoint moves 2 Backup cards into your hand and grants 1 extra energy per turn, so falling behind accelerates you instead of ending the run. Wins pay 25 Gems and losses pay 5, and the 20-level track hands out 550 Trait Rerolls, 400 Memoria Shards and the King of Games title. The 45-card pool includes three captains: Investigation Leader (Spark), The Shadow Monarch (Unknown) and Raging Oni (Unbound).
Apostles Vs Vanguards expands to a six-world, 18-act campaign with up to eight units per team, 600 XP per act and 20 Trait Rerolls on first clear, and each world past the first applies a weather rule that changes how you place: Buried Riches on Floating Island, Cold Snap on Hill of Swords, Strong Winds on Destroyed Hidden Village, Fated Armies on Underground Church, and Statue's Gaze on Double Dungeon, which deletes a marked tile's unit unless you move it in time.
The rest of the patch is additive in the ordinary sense: Pirate Dynasty Arena as Capture the Flag with 3v3 PvP or 3v3 against AI, Elemental Towers split into solo and multiplayer versions with progress reset and the skill tree removed, 17 new Battle Towers restricted to specific categories or elements that open a week after launch, four AV Arcade minigames (Rift Rush, Memoria Matching, Boss Blocks, Vanguardle), eight new emotes, and 14 new Vanguard familiars.
Four units arrive with the update, and their acquisition paths are the part that matters:
| Unit | Rarity / Element | Cost | Damage / Range / SPA | How you get it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yuvi (Gauntlets) | Exclusive / Spark | 4,600¥ | 1K / 20 / 6s | Anniversary 26 banner; also the Day 1 anniversary login reward |
| Seiloshibo (Moon) | Exclusive / Curse | 2,500¥ | 1.20K / 22 / 7s | Anniversary 26 banner; Web Demon Ex in the Spider Forest raid at 5%, guaranteed by the 30th run |
| Death's Grasp (Remembrance) | Exclusive / Cosmic | 2,000¥ | 1K / 21 / 8s | Event Pass tier 50, shiny on the premium track |
| God Ascended (Anniversary) | Vanguard / Holy | 4,000¥ | 800 / 20 / 7s | Evolve God (Standless) with 50,000 Gold and four Saint parts |
The Anniversary Dungeon returns as the Cake Slices '26 source. Every stage clear pays 500 Cake Slices except in Odyssey, Custom Levels and the Ruined City raid, the Anniversary Gauntlet pays 9,000 and the Anniversary Special Stage pays 5,000, and a summon on the Anniversary banner costs 150. Pity sits at 50 summons for a Legendary, 400 for an Exclusive and 5,000 for the Secret, which is God this time, with 11 Exclusives alongside it.
The Progression Trap: Ascensions Removed
This is the single most consequential line in the patch for anyone returning after a break. The changelog states that the Unit Ascension feature has been removed entirely, along with its window, and that units which were previously ascended no longer receive the ascension bonuses they used to have. The materials and time that went into ascending a roster are not refunded or converted — the system, and the bonuses, are simply gone.
What replaced it at Friran is Masteries: every 10 stage wins with a unit in your team earns a Chroma Token for that unit, each token spins for one of 14 chromas across Rare, Epic, Legendary and Mythic, and each unit carries three chroma slots that recolour the model, your range indicator and your attack effects. Duplicates pay Gold instead, scaled by rarity: 500 for Rare, 1,500 for Epic, 5,000 for Legendary and 15,000 for Mythic. Progress is shared between a unit and its evolved forms, and wins in Challenges, Worldlines, Rifts, Odyssey and Elemental Towers do not count toward it.
If you are following an older route that tells you to ascend a carry before spending on traits, that advice is now actively wrong: the Chrome Token track is tied to stage wins with the unit in your team, so the same effort produces a cosmetic roll rather than a stat bonus. Our own Anime Origins wiki covers a game in the same genre that deliberately kept ascension as a material sink, which is the cleanest way to see how far apart the two designs now are.
Two independent recordings of the launch build confirm the removal, and the official showcase presentation for 15.0 does not mention ascension at all.
Codes Live on October 12, 2026
Eight strings were live at launch: seven daily anniversary codes plus one general code. The full table, the redemption path and the troubleshooting notes live on the codes subpage; the part worth flagging here is that the two first-party sources do not agree on every reward.
The 15.0 changelog lists 2ndAnniDay6 as 10,000 Gems and 2ndAnniDay7 as 200 Trait Rerolls plus 200 Memoria Shards. The developer-supported wiki lists Day 6 as 100 Memoria Shards and Day 7 as 100 Trait Rerolls plus 100 Memoria Shards, with an expiry of October 23, 2026 UTC. Days 1 through 5 agree on alternating 100 Trait Rerolls and 100 Memoria Shards. The codes subpage keeps both readings side by side rather than picking a winner, because redeeming the string is the only way to settle it on your own account.
No recording of the launch build speaks a complete code string, so transcripts cannot break the tie either.
Where Coverage Goes Wrong
Three failure modes show up repeatedly in Anime Vanguards material, and each one costs resources if you follow it.
Stale code lists still describe old gates. Lists frozen around the summer 2026 updates carry strings long past their expiry, and several advertise an "Update 14 focus" while quoting codes from two updates earlier. A dead string wastes a minute; a list that mixes working and expired strings wastes the level-10 and level-30 requirements too, because failed redemptions look identical to typos.
Ascension guides outlived the feature. Any route published before October 12, 2026 that spends materials on ascension is describing a system that no longer exists.
The damage numbers changed, so ratio advice may not transfer. Unit damage was lowered evenly across the board and enemy health was rebalanced in Lunar Bridge, Sorcerer Battlefield, Ruined City, the Extermination Event, the Wrath Event, Trials and the Cursed Copycat boss event. The changelog frames this as keeping the meta the same while bringing values to manageable levels. Recorded launch footage shows old units sitting far below the new banner units on raw damage, and whether the rebalance preserved clear difficulty across the whole roster is genuinely not settled yet — treat any confident ranking published in the first days of 15.0 as an opinion, not a measurement.
One more change quietly matters for team building: category and element buffs from familiars, memorias and units now apply only to your own units. Compositions that relied on a support buffing a teammate's carry no longer work that way in multiplayer.
FAQ
What is the newest Anime Vanguards update?
Update 15.0 — 2nd Anniversary, subtitled Rise of the True Shadow Monarch, deployed on October 12, 2026. It added the True Shadow Monarch and his System, Shadow Trials, The First Commander, Card Battle, Apostles Vs Vanguards, Pirate Dynasty Arena, Battle Towers and a full interface rebuild.
How do you get the True Shadow Monarch?
It is a Transcendent evolution of Song Jinwu and Igros, unlocked through the Player Quest rather than a banner. It costs 3,000¥ to place, deals 1.50K damage per hit with 30 range and a 7-second SPA, and when it sits in your first slot it opens a seventh team slot while sharing its trait, stats, familiar and memoria with the rest of the team.
What is the System level cap?
Level 100. Shadow slots unlock as the System levels up, starting with one open alongside the Monarch slot and adding slots at levels 10, 25, 40, 60 and 80.
Does Anime Vanguards still have ascension?
No. Unit Ascension and its window were removed in update 15.0, and previously ascended units lost their ascension bonuses. Friran now runs Masteries instead, where every 10 stage wins with a unit in your team earns a Chroma Token.
Is Anime Vanguards pay to win?
The anniversary banner, bundles and pity track are real spending levers, but the 15.0 progression spine is earned rather than bought: the True Shadow Monarch comes from the Player Quest, shadows are raised from boss corpses, and System Gold is earned in-game. The purchasable shortcuts are trait rerolls, memoria shards and stat chips, which accelerate optimisation of units you already own.
Why do Anime Vanguards code lists disagree with each other?
Because the two first-party sources for the anniversary codes list different amounts for Day 6 and Day 7, and third-party lists copied one or the other without saying which. The codes page records both values and the October 23, 2026 UTC expiry.
