Overview
The True Shadow Monarch is not a banner pull. Kitawari gates it behind the Player Quest as a Transcendent evolution of Song Jinwu and Igros, and once placed it runs a second progression track: System levels, System Gold, three exclusive classes and six recruitable Shadows. Occupying slot one expands Anime Vanguards teams to seven units and shares its trait, stats, familiar and memoria across the lineup, so this route tracks System thresholds — slot unlocks at levels 10, 25, 40, 60 and 80 — rather than a single damage number.
Source: the 15.0 changelog at vanguards.gg/changelog, read October 12, 2026. Official text: "The new Transcendent evolution of Song Jinwu and Igros, unlocked through the Player Quest. When equipped in the first slot, it opens a 7th unit slot and shares its trait, stats, familiar and memoria with the rest of your team."
Everything below reflects the 15.0 build deployed on October 12, 2026. System thresholds, shop prices and payout figures come from that dated changelog, and the raid-style mechanics — the three-attempt raise, the independently levelling attack rotation, the class split and the Portals loop — were cross-checked against two independent recordings of the launch build published on October 11 and 12, 2026.
Before You Start: What the Player Quest Actually Requires
The quest is the gate, and it is not short. Recordings of the launch build describe pushing the Player Quest to level 100 through roughly a hundred individual objectives before the evolution is available, and the evolution consumes Song Jinwu and Igros. Two things follow from that:
- Do not dismantle or trade away those two units while you work on the quest. Community footage treats owning them as the precondition for the evolution, not as a step you can substitute.
- The quest is a background task, not a session. Run it alongside your normal stage clears rather than farming it in isolation, because the objectives are drawn from ordinary play.
Owning the Monarch is also reported to gate a second evolution that uses Saint-piece materials. That detail comes from launch-week recordings rather than the changelog, so treat it as reported rather than confirmed — but it is a reason to hold Saint parts instead of selling them.
The System Level Ladder and Shadow Slots
The Monarch runs two level tracks at once: the ordinary unit level, and System level. The System track is the one that gates features, equipment slots and abilities, and it hands out stat points you allocate yourself — including into damage, range, shadow damage and shadow cost.
The cap is System level 100, and the useful part is where the slots fall:
| System level | What opens |
|---|---|
| 1 | Monarch slot and one Shadow slot |
| 10 | Shadow slot 2 |
| 25 | Shadow slot 3 |
| 40 | Shadow slot 4 |
| 60 | Shadow slot 5 |
| 80 | Shadow slot 6 |
| 100 | Level cap |
Plan around level 25 rather than level 100. Level 25 is where the mode opens up, because it carries both the third Shadow slot and the Job Change checkpoint below.
System EXP and System Gold are earned from takedowns according to the changelog. The official showcase describes Portals as an AFK system that generates both while you are elsewhere, which is a difference in emphasis rather than a contradiction: Portals are the only source that keeps paying when you are not in a match, so dispatch Shadows through them before you log off.
Spending System Gold: The Price Ladder
System Gold is not a currency you can convert into anything else, and everything in the shop competes for the same balance. The full list, as published in the 15.0 changelog:
Weapons equip onto the Monarch himself, and only one can be equipped at a time.
| Weapon | Price | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Venom Fang | Free | Poison for 30% of the unit's damage over 8 seconds; every poison tick stuns for 0.2s and bypasses stun lockout |
| Loyalty Killer | 100 | Attacks deal 20% more damage |
| Bakura's Dagger | 1,000 | +5% damage for each upgrade bought |
| Monarch's Daggers | 3,000 | +30% damage, −5% SPA, +10% range |
| Dragon's Wrath | 9,000 | Damage bypasses Damage Reduction |
| Daggers of Destruction | 15,000 | +100% crit rate and attacks deal 30% more damage |
Orbs equip to Shadows. Each Shadow carries one orb slot.
| Orb | Price | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Orb of Power | 2,000 | +50% damage |
| Orb of Speed | 2,000 | −20% SPA |
| Orb of Sight | 2,000 | +30% range |
| Orb of Cost | 2,000 | −10% upgrade cost |
| Orb of Retainment | 10,000 | The Shadow keeps its upgrades when sold and re-placed |
Consumables are single-use and each can be used once per match.
| Consumable | Price | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Cure-All | 500 | All placed units immune to status effects and debuffs for 60 seconds |
| Phoenix Down | 20,000 | On a stage loss, lives are restored to full and enemies are sent back to the start |
| Strength Boost | 20,000 | Every unit's damage +100% for the stage |
| Investment | 100,000 | All units free to place and upgrade for the stage |
The ordering that wastes least: Venom Fang is free and comes with a stun on every poison tick, which makes it the correct opening weapon even after you can afford better. Buy Dragon's Wrath the moment Damage Reduction enemies are the thing stopping your clears, because it is the only item on the list that answers that specific mechanic. Treat the 100,000-cost Investment as a stage-solving purchase rather than a farming tool — it pays off on a hard clear, not on a routine one.
Raising Shadows Without Losing the Corpse
Shadow recruitment is the part of the system that punishes carelessness hardest. Defeating a recruitable boss leaves a corpse, and you get exactly three attempts to raise it. Fail all three and the corpse disappears — you have to defeat the boss again before you can retry.
Every Shadow then levels from 1 to 10 and carries one innate passive plus seven unlockable ones, of which you can equip two, for three active passives in total. The Healer is the exception to the levelling rule: it levels from stage clears rather than takedowns.
Custom Shadows work differently. Certain existing units can be recruited by defeating their boss counterpart, and instead of a fixed passive they receive a random passive from a pool of seven. That process is repeatable, which means a Custom Shadow with the wrong passive is not a dead end — it is a re-raise.
Three Classes, One Slot
System level unlocks a class tree with eleven skills, and you can equip one class at a time. Applying a skill also unlocks every skill before it in the tree, provided you have the points, so progress is sequential rather than cherry-picked.
The three classes split along a clear line:
| Class | What it improves | Pick it when |
|---|---|---|
| Assassin | The Monarch himself and his personal combat | You want the strongest single-unit carry |
| Pugilist | His manual form | You intend to play the arena and Form of the Monarch yourself |
| Monarch | Strengthening and supporting the shadow army | You want the six Shadows to carry the map |
Switching is a decision, not a toggle: the tree you have already paid into stays where it is. If your clears are automated, Monarch is the class that scales with the six Shadows you are already raising. If you are pushing Shadow Trials personally, Pugilist pays you back directly.
Form of the Monarch and the Attack Rotation
The Monarch's basic attack is not a fixed pattern. It cycles through the attacks you equip, in the order you equip them, and then repeats. Equip three attacks in the order stealth, bloodlust and quick silver and you get exactly that sequence on loop. Each attack also levels independently up to Lv 10 through use, so the rotation you actually run is the rotation that gets stronger.
With Form of the Monarch you take direct control: chains of dashes, jumps and basic or special attacks with lock-on. You equip three of the seven special attacks at a time — Stealth, Bloodlust, Quick Silver, Mutilation, Dagger Rush, Ruler's Authority and Dragon's Fear — which is why rotation order matters more here than on any other unit in the game.
Shadow Trials Checkpoints and the Level 25 Job Change
Shadow Trials is the arena attached to the Monarch and requires owning him. It runs one to four players, holds seven trials from the Goblin up to the Strongest Shadow, and can be replayed on Hard and Nightmare for stars once cleared. You equip three of nine abilities, and Takaroda's shop rotates new weapon offers daily. Hunter rank climbs from E to S.
The checkpoint that changes the mode is the Job Change: at level 25, with all six shadows arisen and an A-rank, it converts the Monarch into a Necromancer and unlocks the two Monarch abilities, a fourth army slot, Igros the Bloodred and Monarch Levels. Getting to level 25 without all six shadows arisen stalls the conversion, so raise Shadows as you level rather than saving them for later.
Gates are structured runs of three to five rooms with a modifier and a boon after each room, on a board that changes daily. Gate bosses and the Weekly Calamity boss drop Relics, and you can equip three at a time. Everything — shadows, gates, relics, daily and weekly quests — is managed from the System window on J.
The payout for the grind is concrete: 250 Trait Rerolls and 250 Memoria Shards by level 25, a Monarch's Cache on every seventh consecutive streak day containing 150 Trait Rerolls and 150 Memoria Shards, and Left Arm of the Saint dropping at 5% from every enemy.
Rollback Plan When a Shadow Raise Fails
Most frustration in this system comes from three specific failures. Here is the recovery route for each.
| Symptom | Cause | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| "The corpse vanished and I have no Shadow" | All three raise attempts failed | Re-clear the boss that drops that corpse and raise again; the attempts do not bank between kills |
| "I cannot unlock the fourth army slot" | The Job Change needs level 25, all six shadows arisen and an A-rank, and you are missing at least one | Arise the missing Shadows first, then confirm your hunter rank before re-entering |
| "My Custom Shadow has a passive I do not want" | Custom Shadows roll a random passive from a pool of seven | Re-raise the same boss counterpart; the roll is repeatable and costs only another kill |
| "My attacks feel weaker than the video I watched" | Each attack levels independently up to Lv 10 through use, and the rotation only cycles what you equipped | Put the attacks you actually use in the equipped slots and keep using them; unused attacks do not level |
| "System Gold runs out immediately" | Weapons, orbs and consumables share one balance, and orb slots are per Shadow | Fund Venom Fang first, then one orb per Shadow you actually field, before any 20,000-plus consumable |
Two independent launch recordings confirm the three-attempt raise rule and the corpse loss, and the official 15.0 presentation states both directly.
Once the Monarch is online, the surrounding economy is best handled with the live anniversary codes, because the daily set pays Trait Rerolls and Memoria Shards — the two resources the System grind consumes fastest. The Anime Vanguards hub carries the rest of the 15.0 systems, including the modes that changed around this one.
FAQ
How do you unlock the True Shadow Monarch in Anime Vanguards?
It is a Transcendent evolution of Song Jinwu and Igros unlocked through the Player Quest, not a banner pull. Launch-build recordings describe driving that quest through roughly a hundred objectives, and the evolution consumes both units.
What is the True Shadow Monarch System level cap?
System level 100. Shadow slots unlock along the way at levels 10, 25, 40, 60 and 80, with the Monarch slot and one Shadow slot open as soon as you unlock him.
What happens if you fail to raise a Shadow?
You get three attempts on a defeated boss corpse. Failing all three destroys the corpse, and you have to defeat the boss again before you can retry the raise.
Which True Shadow Monarch class should you pick?
Assassin improves the Monarch personally, Pugilist improves his manual form, and Monarch strengthens the shadow army. Only one class can be equipped at a time, so match it to whether you play Form of the Monarch yourself or automate the team.
Where does System Gold come from?
The changelog ties System EXP and System Gold to takedowns, while the official showcase describes Portals as an AFK system that generates both while you are away. Portals are worth running either way, because they are the only source that pays when you are not in a match.
Does the True Shadow Monarch replace a normal unit slot?
It uses the first slot, and occupying that slot expands the team to seven units. It also shares its trait, stats, familiar and memoria with the rest of the team, so investment in those applies to the whole lineup rather than to the Monarch alone.
